Wells Activity Center History
The Wells Activity Center, established in 1996, is a town-owned facility located on Sanford Road in Wells, Maine. It is overseen by an appointed Board of Directors who are responsible for managing the building and property, and dedicated to the long-term mission and objectives.
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors have a strong partnership with the Wells Parks & Recreation Department. The Recreation Department Director is responsible for managing the finances of the Wells Activity Center, and through a Coordinator, for the running Recreation Department programs within the facility. The relationship with the Recreation Department is vital to achieving our goal of reducing the financial costs to the town's taxpayers.
Center Mission
Our mission as Directors of the Wells Activity Center is to serve the needs of our community, with an emphasis on activities and programs that promote the health, well-being, and enjoyment of the youth in our community.
Long-Term Success
One of our objectives is to become as self-sufficient as possible to ensure long-term success. We receive significant and important support from the taxpayers, but we work hard to reduce our dependence on Town support. Working with our Coordinator, volunteers, local businesses, and fundraising events, we have received thousands of hours of labor, thousands of dollars of material, and over $50,000 in cash and donations. Our strongest partners have been Bob Jorgensen (and Jorgensen Antiques), the Wells Rotary Club, an anonymous donor, York County Federal Credit Union, Kennebunk Savings Bank, Ocean National Bank, Sanford Institution for Savings, and the Arundel Cabinet Works. Vital individual contributions and effort have come from Frank Higgins and Fred Flannery.
